Play Therapy
"You can discover more about a person
in an hour of play than in a
year of conversation. "
– Plato
The play therapy program at A Total Approach consists of individual sessions with the child, working through areas of concern in a supportive, non-directive manner. Through the child's play they can work out their inner feelings of insecurity, anxiety, frustration, and confusion in the child's own language, that of play. Children use toys as words to express themselves, and to work through their difficulties, control them, and then move on and let go of them, at their own pace.
Who can benefit from play therapy?
Play therapy can be used with children and adolescents who are suffering from social, emotional, behavioral and learning problems, such as:
- Anger management difficulties
- Grief and loss
- Divorce
- Crisis or trauma, such as: abuse, domestic violence, natural disasters
- Low self-esteem
- Siblings of children with special needs
- Other concerns, such as: Anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism, academic or social developmental problems, learning or physical disabilities
Siblings of Children with Special Needs.
- Research indicates as high a number as 65% of siblings who display their own particular set of developmental delays
- Siblings are frequently parentified (take in the parent role) as they learn from their parents how to cope with these difficult situations.
- This causes an unnecessary burden to bear in times of their own personal development and search for their own sense of self
- Children with diagnosis often get "special" treatment as many therapists spend quality one-on-one time with them, making the sibling feel less important and less "special"
- Parents frequently need assistance in their own understanding of all their family needs and how one child could affect so many family dynamics
- The divorce rate amongst families with children with special needs is very high due to these additional stressors to regular family life and expectations.
- Parents have great difficulty juggling all their family needs, and bringing their children to one place where most needs could be met is frequently of great assistance.
