Irlen Syndrome
Helen Irlen is a phenomenal lady whose ingenious practice of tinted lenses has stood the test of time and research. As this works unfolds in front of our eyes, it is amazing how much of the population we treat are affected by visual hypersensitivity to light. In our Autism population it explains many behaviors, and in our adult and dyslexic population it explains the migraines, the feelings of nausea under fluorescent lighting, only to name a few. As Helen describes it herself, it is only for a specific amount of people and is not the "cure" to dyslexia or other learning problems, but if you struggle with this syndrome, it would strongly inhibit you to show your potential in your work. Irlen Syndrome was found to be evident in 12-15% of the typical population and in as much as 46% of the population with learning differences. It is easy and non invasive to rule out, but if found positive for Irlen Syndrome, quite easily rectified. Irlen Syndrome Services at A Total Approach
- We include the pre-screening tool (PASS) in our comprehensive evaluation when the intake information warrants this as a viable option for the client.
- Clients do not have to complete our comprehensive evaluation in order to screen for this difficulty, but could call to set up a screening, which consists of a two hour process.
- During the screening, the color overlay(s) that work for the client will be determined.
- The client will test if these overlays work for him/her over the next 6 to 8 weeks.
- The client will then make a next appointment for a diagnostic evaluation determining the tint color for their lenses.
- ATA will send their regular eye glasses or new eye glasses of their choice to the tinting laboratory in California to be tinted.
- The laboratory will send your glasses to your home.
- This program is for all ages.
- For those on the autism spectrum, who are unable to comply with the testing there would be a different procedure. This is better explained at www.irlen.com
- We are also the hosts for the Irlen Syndrome screeners in the Tri-state area for their annual cluster meetings, including Maryland as well.
- We also provide training for professionals interested in becoming screeners in their school system and/or organization.
